Sydney’s first tram makes 1 million kilometres with more new trams soon on order
Sydney, Friday 18 Feb 2011 – Today, Pyrmont Light Rail’s ‘Light Rail Vehicle 1’ (LRV1) was the first tram to travel one million kilometres.
Just after 9.30 this morning, LRV1 pulled into Star City Station, as it made the one million kilometre mile stone.
Daryl Rodriguez, the Light Rail driver who had the pleasure of being on shift when LRV1 clicked over, said he felt privileged to be driving at the time.
“I’ve been working for Light Rail for five years and driving trams for three and a half,” he said
“I’m really lucky to be the one driving today because generally I’m on permanent night shift and I rarely drive during the day. I just happened to be called in to do a day shift today,” said Daryl.
One million kilometres of travel on the current light rail system equates to just over 69,444 loops. Read More...
Metro Light Rail welcomes the network extension to Circular Quay and Dulwich Hill
Sydney - Metro Transport Sydney, the owners of Sydney’s light rail network, welcome the Government’s announcement today to extend the current light rail service through the new Barangaroo development to Circular Quay and from Lilyfield to Dulwich Hill.
Kevin Warrell, CEO, Metro Transport Sydney said today, “Extending the Light Rail further west and through the CBD to service the Barangaroo development is a very smart move.
“The Barangaroo development will generate a lot of extra travel from commuters, residents and tourists and Light Rail is the perfect high capacity, environmentally responsible and high quality public transport solution.”“Light Rail can provide the glue to integrate this large, new precinct into the rest of the City. As a modern, green, responsible form of public transport Light Rail is entirely in keeping with the spirit of the Barangaroo development and will fit in very well,” said Mr Warrell.
Mr Warrell said, “This extension of the Light Rail network will add to and complement the existing modes of public transport in Sydney connecting to the inner west to Central and Circular Quay.”
Kevin Warrell, CEO said, “And using the existing transport corridor to provide additional public transport in the Inner West is low cost, simple and quick. The freight line was refurbished quite recently and is in very good condition.”
“We look forward to working with the Government to deliver this key transport project,” he said.
Metro Transport has been speaking with Government since the network first opened in 1997 about a number of cost effective, sensible extension options including a CBD extension down George Street and a western extension along the existing freight rail line to Dulwich Hill.

An Independent Public Inquiry has been established to create the Long Term Public Transport Plan for Sydney to inform decisions by future governments on the priorities over the next 30 years. Sydney needs an integrated public transport network to drive a sustainable, liveable and viable future at time of increased pressure from climate change, growing demand for transport resources and reduced oil reserves. Confusion as people expect trams to be extended into Sydney CBD
There is much talk about Metro Sydney and CBD Metro, which has caused a great deal of confusion.
There is little wonder why there is confusion between Metro Light Rail and the NSW Government’s new project.
The company that owns Metro Light Rail is called Metro Transport Sydney. The NSW Government agency responsible for planning, delivering and commissioning the CBD Metro is called Metro Sydney. Read more...
