The collection centres around five display themes - Discovery, Passengers, Commerce, Leisure and Navy and US-Australian maritime links. The National Maritime Collection was built over five years by purchase, transfer from other collections and gifts, including historic vessels.
The museum offers a fun and exciting hands-on program for children and their families during the school holidays. Activities include theatre productions, storytelling, character guided tours, children's films and craft activities in Kids Deck. The program changes every school holidays and is linked to one of the museum's exhibitions.
